Dimensions: 6 x 3.0 x 2.5 inches
Weight: 837 grams
Source: Fengjiashan Mine, Daye County, Hubei, China
This is one of the most commanding pieces from the 2025 Fengjiashan pocket—a dramatic, large-format specimen featuring a dense cluster of jet-black pyrite cubes erupting from a matrix of sharply terminated quartz. At nearly 1 kilogram in weight, this piece offers true visual presence, with crisp geometry and contrast-rich mineral association.
The composition is highly architectural—an explosion of dark cubic forms offset by radiant quartz prisms. This is a show-quality specimen for collectors who value bold, structural mineral aesthetics and natural oxidation textures.
This piece was mined from the Fengjiashan skarn-type polymetallic deposit, one of China’s premier sources for complex iron sulfide mineralization. As hydrothermal fluids moved through limestone, they deposited iron and sulfur into open vugs—creating perfect cubic pyrite growth. Subsequent silica-rich fluids formed quartz, filling the remaining cavities with clear, terminated crystals.
The darkened color of the pyrite is a result of natural surface oxidation, with traces of hematite and limonite visible on several crystal faces—evidence of long-term atmospheric exposure before recovery.
This piece is rich in both form and balance. The pyrite cubes show excellent sharpness, density, and stacking. Many are intergrown in geometrically pleasing clusters that break the surface of the quartz like towers.
Black pyrite is revered for grounding, shadow work, and energetic shielding. It supports strength and confidence while transmuting negative energy. Paired with quartz—known as the master amplifier—this piece is said to strengthen intuition, focus, and psychic protection. This makes it ideal for crystal grids, altar displays, or energy-rich interior spaces.
While pyrite and quartz are common, specimens of this size, weight, and mineral density are not. Most Chinese pyrite pieces feature 1–2 cubic faces at most—this one has over a dozen, many of them prominently exposed. The 2025 pocket that produced this was limited, and pieces of this scale are almost never exported intact.
This piece was recovered from one of the deeper oxidation zones in the Fengjiashan pocket mined in early 2025. Its density of black pyrite and well-articulated crystal faces make it one of the strongest examples from this lot. Perfect for advanced collectors or those seeking a premium representation of China’s skarn mineral richness.
